New Level Crossing Opens at Männiku

The new railway level crossing opened at Männiku improves safety and traffic management in the area. On 29 September 2011 the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority issued usage permits to a new railway level crossing opened in Mäniku village and its automatic traffic lights system.

With opening of the new level crossing on 1 October 2011 were closed old Karjääri and Männiku crossings that were not compliant with today’s safety requirements. Raigo Uukkivi, Director General of Technical Surveillance Authority, explained that the main reason for building the new level crossing and rearranging traffic were the frequent railway accidents. “Traffic density on closed level crossings was quite low and thus we consider using one modern level crossing instead of two outdated ones a step forward, both from safety and traffic management perspective,“ added Raigo Uukkivi.

Railway traffic reorganisation planning for Männiku started simultaneously with the reconstruction project of Männiku-Saku road section in 2009. The Technical Surveillance Authority approved the design terms of the reconstruction works, verified safety and convenience of use considering the new location and equipment of the level crossing and issued respective construction and usage permits.

The construction of new Männiku level crossing was accomplished thanks to good cooperation between the Technical Surveillance Authority, Road Administration, Saku Rural Municipality Government and Edelaraudtee Infrastruktuuri AS.
