Postal Worker Hit by Train in Tallinn Dies

This morning (29 February 2012) died a postman hit early morning by an electric passenger train in Tallinn. The accident caused 4-hour disruptions in train traffic.

This morning at 5.53 a man was ht by electric train nearby Raudtee Street 117 building in Tallinn, reported the Rescue Board. The man died. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated.

The police reported that the accident happened at the pedestrian crossing located next to Kivimäe railway station. The man was carrying an “Express Post” mail bag.

Karin Zeiger, Delivery Director of Express Post, explained that the man was an employee of the company who has been working as a postman for the last two years. She also explained that the man was working in Kivimäe city district but his route did not require crossing railway.

The accident caused long disruptions in train traffic. The train that was supposed to leave Saue for Tallinn at 6.02 AM was stopped in Saue station and the passengers were told that a technical failure has occurred. Then the train drove on to the next station where it was stopped until 7.02 AM. The train information hotline was busy with calls and hard to reach. The hotline told one of the passengers that an accident has happened nearby Pääsküla station.

Due to the accident were cancelled four train departures and many trains were delayed. Train traffic was reopened at 9.30 AM.
