Man sitting on railway tracks in Tartu gets hit by train and dies

Today (26 June 2013) in the morning took place a traffic accident in the end of Võru street in Tartu where a man was hit by a train. The man died at the scene of accident.

Ragne Keisk, the spokesperson of the Southern Police Prefecture, explained to the “Õhtuleht” that the accident happed at 10.45 AM and involved a man born in 1975 sitting on railway tracks. The passenger train driving in his direction was not able to stop. The police told that at the time when the accident happened there were 20 passengers on board of the train.

While the reporter of the “Õhtuleht” arrived, the signs of the tragedy were still there but the railway line was already open for train traffic. Next to the scene of the tragic accident was an unofficial pedestrian crossing that appeared to be used often by the locals for crossing railway. The men working on railway tracks some 500 metres from the scene of the accident noticed the accident only when the train braked for stopping. The local inhabitants heard about the accident through media and they could not tell whether the man killed was someone living in the neighbourhood.

The details of the accident are being investigated.
