Creativity contest “YOU CAN” 2011
Eastern Police Prefecture, NPO Operation lifesaver Estonia and Western Viru County Government announced in November railway safety related creativity contest “YOU CAN”. The results of the contest were announced on December 17, 2011 in Brezza Cafeteria of Rakvere Northern Shopping Mall- During the event were thanked all the participants and their teachers.
- You can – cross railway safely and be a good example for your friends;
- You can – help your close ones in crossing railway safely;
- You can – make your life safer;
- You can – participate in the creativity contest on railway safety in order to inform others about railway related dangers.
The aim of the creativity contest that is held already for the third consecutive year is discussing railway safety issues and improving public awareness about dangers related to railway traffic, thus reducing the number of people losing their life on rails. The contest expected creative ideas in different format: video, picture, word, sound, etc. that could reach the target groups via different media.
Tamo Vahemets, Chairman of the Board of Operation Lifesaver Estonia, said that it was clearly visible how hard both the students and teachers have worked. The works sent for the contest indicate clearly that at least 115 students have understood that railways are dangerous and started a discussion that actually was the objective of the organisers.
The organiser of the contest from the Eastern Police Prefecture, police officer responsible for prevention Annela Floren and health promotion specialist of the Estonian Health promotion Association Olga Boitsov agreed that the contest was a success. This is evidenced by the crowing number of participants and the large variety of works presented. The organisers are certain that the contest tradition will continue also in the forthcoming years as long as they can find sponsors supporting the project.
We were happy to see that Western Viru County Government decided to continue supporting the contest, thus appraising both railway safety activities and creativity of youth.
In his address to students and teachers Mr. Einar Vallbaum called on the young people to think even bigger and more openly. “Let your ideas fly!” said Vallbaum in the end of his speech.
The contest expected to receive artwork from students studying in grades 1-9 in the schools of Western Viru County. We received ideas from 115 students of seven different schools. From OLE’s point of view it was extremely good to see that this year the contest had almost three times more participants than a year ago. The large number of works made the decision making also three times more complicated. In appraising the works, the jury considered creativeness and originality of the ideas, as well as their compliance with the theme of the contest and level of technical presentation.
