Passenger Platform Reconstruction Works Commence in Tallinn

Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority press release

17.04.2012

In April were started in Tallinn extensive passenger platform reconstruction works in course of which the platforms are made safer, more comfortable and compatible with the new passenger trains arriving next year. In Tallinn will be rebuilt all passenger platforms from Balti station to Laagri and in Kitseküla. The platforms of Ülemiste station have already been rebuilt based on the new requirements. Platform reconstruction works in Tallinn area last until the end of the year 2012.

During the reconstruction works are temporarily changed the routes of passengers on platforms and in stations in general. While getting on and off a train, the passengers are expected to follow the signs that direct them on a safe route. It is also important to observe the movement of construction equipment and not go on the construction site. All parents should tell to their children about the changes and, if necessary, explain in the stations how to move and what to pay attention to.

By the time of introducing the new trains, all passenger platforms in Estonia will be rebuilt in order to make them suitable for servicing the new trains and compliant with today’s safety and comfort requirements. Particular attention is paid to safety – all stops are designed so that the danger areas are clearly marked for passengers. The edges of the platform will be coated with rough surface in order to avoid people slipping whilst entering or leaving trains. Special touchable signs, stairs and ramps will be built in order to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility.

The large-scale reconstruction of passenger platforms started in 2008. To date, 100 renovated platforms have already been introduced all around Estonia.

Daily information about reconstruction works and temporary restrictions is available in the safety portal of the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority www.ohutus.ee.
